Hotel pillows and duvets: comfort, hygiene and care

Synthetic or down, firm or soft, fill weight, washing: how to choose the pillows and duvets for your hotel, and how to offer a pillow menu.

White pillows and duvet on a hotel bed

Pillows and duvets are the parts of the bed guests touch first. They have to be comfortable, impeccably hygienic and easy for the laundry to look after. Here’s how to choose them.

Pillows

Synthetic, gel or down?

Filling Strengths Who for
Synthetic fibres Washable, hypoallergenic, economical Most rooms
Gel or memory fibres Support, coolness Business travellers, superior rooms
Down and feather Loft, softness, upscale Four- and five-star hotels, suites

Firm, soft or flat?

Every guest has their ideal pillow: firm for side sleepers, softer for back sleepers, flat for front sleepers. The most appreciated solution: two pillows of different firmness per person, and a pillow menu available at reception.

Sizes

The most common sizes are 45 × 70, 50 × 70, 60 × 60 and 65 × 65 cm. Choose them according to your pillowcases and the width of the bed.

Our range of hotel pillows runs from synthetic to gel and down, with microfibre, percale or cotton sateen covers.

Duvets

Fill weight

  • Light duvet (under 250 g/m²): summer, warm regions, very warm rooms.
  • Medium duvet (around 300 g/m²): the all-year standard.
  • Warm duvet (400 g/m² and above): winter, mountain resorts, cooler rooms.
  • All-season duvet: a light duvet and a medium one that fasten together in winter.

Synthetic or down?

As with pillows, synthetic is washable and hypoallergenic, while down brings upscale lightness and warmth. For twin beds that can be pushed together, a twin duvet (two duvets joined with press studs) makes switching from one layout to the other easier.

Hygiene comes first

  1. Pillow and duvet protectors on every bed: they are washed after every departure and extend the life of the filling.
  2. Washability: check that synthetic pillows and duvets can withstand your laundry’s high-temperature wash.
  3. Hypoallergenic: offer a synthetic alternative in rooms where you use down.
  4. Rotation and checks: a pillow that no longer recovers its shape should be replaced.

How many do you need?

Plan a rotation stock: enough to replace items in the wash and meet requests for extra pillows. A spare pillow in the wardrobe saves plenty of calls to reception.

The topper, a comfort ally

To complete the comfort of the bed, a mattress topper adds softness and protects the mattress. See also how to choose a hotel mattress.

In short

  • Two pillows per person, of different firmness, and a pillow menu.
  • A duvet with a fill weight suited to the season and the region.
  • Washable protectors and a rotation stock.

Synthetic or down pillows?

Synthetic pillows are washable, hypoallergenic and economical: they suit most rooms. Down and feather offer upscale loft and softness for higher categories.

How many pillows per bed?

Two per person is a good standard: one firm and one softer, or two the same. A pillow menu at reception lets you meet special requests.

Which duvet fill weight should I choose?

Around 300 g/m² for an all-year duvet in a heated room, lighter in summer or in warm regions. An all-season duvet combines a light duvet and a warmer one that fasten together in winter.
