It’s one of the most-used items in the room and one of the most mentioned in reviews: too weak, too noisy, nowhere to be found or broken. Choosing the right hair dryer means avoiding daily complaints and frequent replacements.
Wall-mounted or handheld?
| Type | How it works | Strengths | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wall-mounted | Fixed to the wall on a holder, connected by a coiled cord | Doesn’t go missing, switches on when lifted, always in its place | More moderate power |
| Handheld | Kept in a drawer or pouch, plugged into a socket | More powerful, more comfortable | Can be moved or taken away |
For most hotels, wall-mounted is the go-to solution: it stays in the bathroom, starts when lifted off the holder and stops when hung back up. A high-power handheld model appeals to higher categories, spas and guests who need fast drying.
Our range of hotel hair dryers includes wall-mounted models and more powerful models for higher categories: compare them on each product page.
Power: not too much, not too little
A hair dryer that’s too weak is the number one cause of complaints. As a guide:
- 1,200 to 1,600 W for a wall-mounted model: enough for everyday use;
- 2,000 W and above for a high-power handheld model;
- at least two speeds and two heat settings, plus a cold shot button to set the style.
Check the capacity of the bathroom circuit: a kettle, a heater and a hair dryer running at the same time can trip old wiring.
Safety first
In a bathroom, electricity calls for precautions:
- A safety switch on the holder: the appliance only works when lifted off.
- Overheat protection: automatic cut-out if the air intake is blocked.
- Compliant installation within the bathroom safety zones, by a qualified electrician.
- A coiled cord of a good length, so guests can reach the mirror without pulling on the cable.
Noise and weight
A noisy hair dryer wakes the neighbours early in the morning: compare noise levels where the information is available. A light, well-balanced appliance is more pleasant to use, especially for long hair.
Where to install it
- Near the mirror, ideally next to a magnifying mirror for comfortable styling.
- At shoulder height, so guests can lift it off without bending.
- Away from splashes from the shower and the bath.
- With a shaver socket nearby if possible.
In a room with a small bathroom, a wall-mounted model frees up the vanity top; a handheld model can be stored in a drawer with a pouch.
Maintenance
- Clean the air intake filter regularly: a clogged filter makes the appliance overheat and shortens its life.
- Check the cord during deep cleans: a damaged cord must be replaced straight away.
- Keep one or two spare units at reception to replace a faulty one immediately.
Common mistakes
- Choosing the cheapest model: it breaks down sooner and costs more in replacements and bad reviews.
- Fitting the holder too low, too far from the mirror or behind the door.
- Forgetting to plan the electrical supply during a refurbishment: a wall-mounted unit is connected to a dedicated line.
Completing the bathroom
The hair dryer is part of a whole: accessories, magnifying mirror and dispensers. Find the full list in our guide to hotel bathroom accessories.
