Hotel room armchairs: how to choose the right one

Compact, desk or lounge armchair: how to choose the armchair for your hotel rooms by floor space, use and upkeep, with matching upholstery.

Upholstered armchair in the seating area of a hotel room

The armchair in a guest room is where guests read, work, put their shoes on or wait. It’s also a strong decorative element: it sets the tone of the room in booking photos. Here’s how to choose one.

Three uses, three types of armchair

Type Use Where
Dining armchair Working at the desk, eating in the room Standard rooms, desk
Compact armchair Sitting down, reading, putting things down Standard rooms
Lounge chair Relaxing, reading for longer Superior rooms, suites

In a room where space is tight, a single dining armchair at the desk can do several jobs. In a suite, a seating area with a lounge chair and pouffe changes how the room feels.

The space available

  • Width: a compact armchair is under 75 cm wide; a lounge chair 75 to 90 cm.
  • Depth: allow the depth of the armchair plus 50 cm of clearance in front.
  • Circulation: the armchair mustn’t block access to the window, the wardrobe or the bathroom.

Draw a scale plan before you choose: an armchair that’s too big makes the room feel cluttered.

Comfort

  • A firm seat in high-density foam keeps its shape despite repeated use.
  • Armrests help guests get up, a real plus for older guests.
  • A seat height of around 42 to 46 cm suits most uses.
  • For a lounge chair, a lower, deeper seat invites relaxation.

The base

Wooden legs, metal legs, swivel pedestal: our product pages show every available base as thumbnails. A swivel pedestal is handy at the desk; four wooden legs bring warmth to a seating area.

Fabric and colour

The armchair is often the splash of colour in the room. Choose:

  • a contract fabric, velvet or faux leather that’s hard-wearing and easy to clean;
  • a suitable fire rating if your property is a building open to the public;
  • a colour that goes with the headboard and curtains.

All our seating can be upholstered in a fabric from our contract collection, which also covers headboards and bed bases: the whole room matches in one go.

The pouffe, the armchair’s ally

A pouffe in front of a lounge chair serves as a footstool, extra seating or, with a tray, a coffee table. Several of our pouffes match our armchairs.

Catalogue or custom armchair?

Our armchairs cover most needs, with a wide choice of bases and fabrics. For a particular shape or size, our design office also makes custom furniture, manufactured and delivered within 4 to 6 weeks.

In short

  1. A dining armchair at the desk, a compact or lounge chair depending on the floor space.
  2. High-density foam and armrests.
  3. A fire-rated contract fabric that matches the room.

Lead time: 4 to 6 weeks. Send us your room plans and we’ll recommend the model and size.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What size of armchair suits a hotel room?

In a standard room, a compact armchair under 75 cm wide fits in without crowding the space. Deeper lounge chairs are best kept for superior rooms and suites.

Armchair or chair at the guest-room desk?

A dining armchair, with armrests, is more comfortable for working. It can also double as a relaxing chair in rooms without space for a seating area.

Which fabric suits a guest-room armchair?

A contract fabric or velvet that resists abrasion and is easy to clean, with a suitable fire rating. Faux leather is the easiest to look after.
